Yes! You read that correctly, in today's post we take a look at one of the lesser known "Pre-Merger" built cars - the AMG tuned Mitsubishi Galant.
Just listed on Bringatrailer, this very rare and Japan market only tuned Galant, was the subject of a brief partnership between AMG and Mitsubishi in the late 80's/early 90's that resulted in the production of two distinct builds. The first, being the Mitsubishi Debonair AMG, which was (oddly) a primarily cosmetic outfitting by a company known more predominantly for their performance upgrades. The second build in the partnership was this Galant variant, which was offered in two distinct trims, known as Type I and Type II.
The differences in both types were primarily cosmetic, with the Type I being equipped with a two-tone interior, a unique rear spoiler, and in some cases a different style set of wheels. What did not differ between the two, however, was the AMG Tuned 2.0L 4G63 in-line 4Cyl that came standard on the Galant. Taking a different approach, the AMG tuned motor was naturally aspirated and front wheel drive, producing 168hp and 141lb-ft torque, as opposed to the 4WD setup that would have come standard on the GTI-16V Galant.
A total of just 500 of these cars are believed to have been built, so seeing one stateside is surely a rare sight. We are aware of just one other example currently in the country, located on the east coast. Being that this one is currently being sold in California, this should hopefully increase your chances of seeing one of these at your next cars and coffee! Head over to the auction to place your bid, and let us know if you end up taking her home!
