As the W220 S Class ages we find them harder to resist when clean examples are listed. Well sorted examples can be extremely rewarding to own and drive especially as the W220 seems to be aging more gracefully these days. Examples like this recently listed 2001 S500 Sport seem to be the ideal W220 and all the options boxes seem to align nicely for a solid presentation. It can be found listed here on Craigslist outside Portland, Oregon for a reasonable $10,900.
Finished in Travertine Beige (693) over Black (231) Nappa leather, this S500 looks to be plucked out of a Mercedes sales brochure in 2000 when warm metallic paints and soft lines were the norm. Subtle AMG design cues (included with the optioned Sport Package) help balance the W220 with slightly more aggressive ground effects and staggered 18 inch AMG chrome wheels. In most situations we’d opt out of the chrome but for this specific car Travertine seems to be complimented by the reflective finish.
Overall, the S500 seems to show well and given the odometer is only showing 48k miles, we can’t say we’re surprised. The Nappa hide seats look barely sat in and the paint still retains its original finish. As an added bonus, the often cloudy headlamps still look factory fresh and the only noteworthy imperfection we can spot is the missing tow hook cover on the back bumper. Keep in mind these aren’t hard to come by but a Travertine Beige piece may take some time to track down. If you’re too impatient, it’s very easy to have one painted by your local body shop.
Altogether this is one of the higher priced early W220’s on the market but given the mileage, clean history, and options we can’t complain too much about the sellers asking price. Manage to get this under 10k sale price and we’ll applaud the purchase all day long. Examples like this will continue to become more scarce which should help with value retention on cars just like this one. Remember, it’s still an early W220 so make sure to budget accordingly for the maintenance.
