Flagship of the 90's: 1997 S420

The w140 S Class was a generation defining vehicle with no limit on the amount of funds that Mercedes-Benz was willing to spend to develop this flagship car. The quality of these vehicles is still a step above almost everything that has come out since and it you can easily feel the difference when sitting behind the wheel. At first glance, this car might be mistaken for a Grand Edition S500. The Grand Edition w140 was only offered in 1999 with the m119 5.0L. Of the 600 that were produced, the only color combination it came in was black on tan and each was optioned with a set of 18" AMG monoblock wheels which really set the car off.

Currently showing just under 114k miles in New York City, this 1997 S420 has a similar set up and look. With an asking price of $8,500, it's very tempting to jump on an example as nicely maintained as this. Finished in black (040) over beige (265) with walnut trim, this w140 is powered by a 4.2L m119 V8. Power was on par with the s500 but the s420 was rated with slightly better MPGs. Many people prefer the standard shock and spring suspension all around as this s420 has, unlike the SLS rear-leveling suspension offering that was seen on most s500 version. While both provide premium ride quality, the SLS can be more costly to maintain at this age.

The wheels are genuine 18" AMG monoblocks traditionally found on Grand Edition specs. Judging from the photos, the wheels are in great condition unlike the vast majofity of sets found today. The car wears 255/45ZR18, Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum tires and the seller states they are 95% with less than 2000 miles on them. One of the highlights of this car is the thorough book of maintenance records that accompanies the car. In addition, a healthy amount of recent service with receipts is included which makes us hopeful that this s420 is turn key ready for many more miles ahead. Some of the most notable receipts show the following:

- Brake Discs (140 421 10 12)

- Akebono EURO Ultra-Premium Ceramic Brake Pads

- Shock Absorbers and Strut Assemblies.

- Drive Shaft (part number 230 4100 115)

- Set of 255/45ZR18 Kumho tires, Ecsta LX Platinum KU27

- Spark Plugs and Ignition coils.

- Steering Gear Box

- Cooling System Job, replaced both upper and lower radiator hoses, expansion tank hose, bypass hose, thermostat kit and flush coolant.

- Serpentine Drive Belt replaced.

- Electrical Plate Automatic Transmission replaced.

- Throttle Chamber replaced.

- Bluetooth Adapter for Factory Radio

The car comes with a clean carfax showing no accidents and the seller states he has the title in hand with no liens. The paint appears to be in excellent condition with no fading or corrosion, even on the underbody. The seller notes the vacuum soft-close door feature operates flawlessly along with all other electronics. If you're in the market for a w140, this s420 certainly is making a case for front runner.
