For those not familiar with the words M156 and P30, this Arctic White 2008 E63 AMG is a textbook example to learn from. Hiding on craigslist with limited photos but at an accessible price point, it is more than worth the mention. It can be found listed here on Craigslist for $13,998 in San Jose, CA.
The E63 AMG sedans (and wagons) really drove home the mid-size performance sedan segment in the late 2000s. Made from 2007 to 2009, these W211 AMGs were a mid-cycle refresh for then Daimler-Chrysler that took much of the E55 AMG platform, replaced the drivetrain (more on that at the end), and added more alcantara amongst other things.
The “special” factor on this specific example are the two-piece AMG wheels available only on a “P30” or “Performance Package” optioned vehicle. This P30 option available on all 2007-2009 E63 AMGs is most identifiable by these wheels and must be confirmed by the alcantara inserts on the steering wheel (only available in black).
This E63 is not just a wheel swapped E63 because it has the correct styled steering wheel. In addition to the P2 package which seems to have come almost standard on E63s, the performance package is a rare and enthusiast-preferred option. While the P2 includes bi-xenon headlights with active curve illumination, keyless go, and heated headlight washers for about $3600 in 2008 dollars, the $8500 P30 designated performance package provided two-piece wheels, the alcantara steering wheel, a limited slip differential, and a delimited top speed to 186 mph. Looking closer, the keyless start button on the shifter reaffirms the seller’s description that this is a P2 package car. One thing to ask about is the peeling plastic film around the headlight knob.
The interior looks reasonably clean with minor wear on the driver’s seat bolster. When inspecting the interior, check that the lumbar and under leg support features that use a compressed air system work well. On a similar note, the seat adjustment buttons are plastic and have a tendency to break if not handled gently.
Taking a step back out of the vehicle to look under the hood, these E63s came with a DOHC 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 good for 507 hp @ 6800 rpms and 465 lb-ft of torque @ 5200 rpms. The first motor designed from the ground up by AMG, this is the one you want and what made the C63 AMG so popular in the same era (but with a lesser 451 HP originally). Mated to a reliable 7-speed automatic, these E63s are a more refined experience compared to the supercharged E55 predecessor. This example looks reasonably clean underneath the hood suggesting they have kept up on gasket services, and it’s a California car as well.
Most P30-optioned vehicles stay at the high end of the price range but with enough mileage, some become more accessible as daily drivers, but very few are a color other than black or silver. Once a potential buyer verifies that the airmatic shock absorbers have been replaced once in the car’s last 135k miles, and check wear on the front brake rotors ($$$), this could be a very reasonable way to maximize luxury HP for your dollar.
