To Swap or not to Swap: 1977 450SLC 5.0

C107’s are becoming harder to track down in nice shape, no matter the variant. Rarest of all, at only 4 percent of SLC total production, was the 450SLC 5.0. It’s not uncommon to see authentic 5.0’s run through luxury auction houses for 50k USD or more in recent years and that’s what makes this Euro-spec 1977 450SLC with a 5.0 swap so attractive to us as a daily driver or light project. This car can be found here on Craigslist for $12,500 in Rochester, New York.

Although a lot of the cars history isn’t divulged in the listing, we do know the car was repainted by the previous owner at which point we can assume the Lorinser bumpers and Zender spoiler were also added. Also left out are the very important details on the 5.0 swap itself. We’re hopeful a call to the seller could clear up most of these questions.

While the interior focal point is the period-correct AMG steering wheel trimmed in a medium blue leather, the rest of the cars presents itself as utilitarian. The beige cloth seats look fantastic as does the matching door trim and dashboard. Features include manual windows, a power sunroof, and what seems to be a driver-added fire extinguisher under the driver's seat.

Although not original and ambiguously built, this C107 presents well and seems to be a great deal when compared to current market values of factory 5.0 C107's. If you’re looking for a drivable 450SLC with some unique upgrades and features, this could be it.
