We’re not the first ones to be attracted to a car for the color and certainly not the last. On the occasion this does happen, we hope to find the car in question to be in decent shape with low mileage and some interesting options. In the case of this 1999 SLK230 Kompressor it seems to check all the boxes and still be priced well within reasonable range. Yellowstone (685) has become one of the paint colors we look forward to seeing on any model from the early 2000’s. Although several models were painted in the color at one time or another, it always seems to be most at home on the R170 generation SLK. On this specific example, the paint appears to be largely blemish free and seems to have been garage kept for the majority of its life. The interior looks sharp as it's finished in Black leather (221) and nicely accented with the Sport trim of the time- a mock carbon fiber trim that was reserved mostly for Sport Package cars.
The Sport Appearance Package (772) really manages to liven up the first generation of SLK’s with the more aggressive ground effects, steering wheel, and of course those perfectly period specific 17” staggered wheels. At the time this was offered, the SLK32 AMG or any other AMG variants of the SLK were still a few years away so this was by far the most aggressive SLK of the time. As a result these cars received decent support from the aftermarket community as owners looked to fine-tune suspension or supercharger output.
Reported by the seller to be his mother-in-laws car from day one, this SLK is absolutely a rare find given the color, options, mileage, and condition. Buyers should consider this as a bargain roadster capable of daily duty while expecting value retention or possibly some appreciation. This is largely thanks to the low mileage but all the attributes of this SLK add up quickly. If a showroom find is what you’re after we’d recommend fixing the flaking paint on the center console (happens to every R170) and possibly a light wheel refinish as one of the wheels seems slightly curbed. In writing this feature, we’re even tempted to buy this car but we should be saving some cool finds for the rest of the market.
