Coming up for sale is this 1985 short wheelbase 280GE in Astral Silver. The truck has just surpassed 103,000 miles and has been under the care of just two owners in the Washington D.C. area since new. Originally imported to the US in 1985, arriving in Baltimore, the current owner purchased the truck from a family friend in 2004 and has been garaged-kept ever since.
The seller undertook a significant mechanical refurbishment of the 280GE soon after their acquisition years ago. This work included the refurbishment of the cylinder head, the installation of a new exhaust, a new fuel pump etc. The service history of all major works is available for all interested parties. All work was done by Eurasian Service Center, in Tysons Corner, Virginia and Mercedes-Benz of Tysons Corner.
Today, the truck exhibits the reliability for which Mercedes of the era are known for. In 2015, a $15,000 rust removal and paint refinish was performed and the truck's paint presents very well for the age. In January of this year, new suspension and brake lines were installed using parts sourced from Mercedes-Benz, with parts and labor totaling $12,000. This is likely one of the best examples of the W460 G-Wagen in the United States with one of the most desirable paint and interior combinations.
The smooth and powerful straight-6 is mated to a 5-speed manual which makes the truck very usable on modern roads. Acceleration is better than expected and the truck can cruise comfortably at 60 mph.
The plaid interior is in excellent condition with just some wear on the driver's left bolster. Options include rare Recaro sport seats, air conditioning, and a clever little passenger map light. The truck is not equipped with diff locks -- a sign it has never been abused off-road, despite sitting on perfectly sized BFGoodrich All-Terrains T/As for a nice aesthetic.
